2A: Bug List

Bug List

 1.   Interior doors aren’t a perfect fit to the door frame which allows light and sounds to pass through. As someone who sleeps in complete darkness, this keeps me up.a.       This exists because doors are hung and created individually from the door frame and therefore are not exact fits. This is because it is easier to install and build doors with some space for error. (i.e. wiggly room)2.      Most cheaper furniture builds, like the kind you find at Walmart or Ikea, wobble. More expensive furniture wobbles less but because of its material and weight, not necessarily because its better put together.a.       A Joint sufficiently tight enough to eliminate wobbly furniture doesn’t come simply enough to be assembled at home for most furniture products.3.      HDMI cables are thick, rigid and unsightly. For most modern entertainment set-ups, multiple cables are needed and they create bulky clutter behind most TVsa.       A cheap wireless HDMI substitute doesn’t exist. HDMI cables must be thick due to the high amount of information they transfer.4.      Peeing on yourself at Urinalsa.       The surface tension of the water and the angle create a backsplash. Men’s heights vary which creates difficulty in creating a urinal with an appropriate angle.5.      Cans don’t 100% dispense all of the drink/soda.a.       The ridge that stops it provides stability to the can6.      Trash bags do a terrible job at keeping in food smells.a.       The bags don’t close 100% and are not airtight.7.      Flyers around campus are sometimes covered when the event is still upcoming, and old flyer which advertises past events are left up. a.       There isn’t a set system, or device for organizing them or automatically removing old ones.8.      Clothes are left in the washer when finished and not moved into the dryer automatically. i.e. The washer and dryer aren’t linked. a.       The units would have to specialize and would be very expensive.9.      I forget to water my plants, so they often die.a.       Water valves often leak, which wastes water and they aren’t reliable. I don’t remember to water them because they are in my backyard and I don’t often see them.10.  My ceiling fans wobble too much, and it makes a lot of noise.a.       They are old and, with time, the screws loosen, and it creates space for the movement. 11.  Dry clothes stick to your skin when your skin is wet, which makes it challenging to put on clothes after the pool/showera.       Wet clothes stick to your skin. Towels do a bad job at drying all of your bad.12.  Its challenging to hang picture frames. They are often crooked or not even to the wall or area where you want them.a.       Frames are hung from the back, so placing a picture is a guessing game as to where the “hook” is. Frames are large and difficult to hang by yourself. Adhesives are unreliable.13.  Matching socks.a.       Socks are separated (on your feet) and then have to reunite when they are clean. They get separated, lost, or get put in different loads of laundry and later reuniting them becomes a game of Mahjong.  14.  Eyeglasses swelter and fog when it's hot outside or with steam when they are on your face.a.       Steam condensates on the glass. Eyeglasses aren’t made with hydrophobic materials that would prevent them.15.  I bite my fingernails and I end up hurting my cuticles. I don’t realize that I’m doing it until its too late.a.       It’s a habit that is meant for dealing with stress.16.  Other people’s high beams on the interstate.a.       Other people forget to turn off their high beams and it causes vision problems. They don’t automatically turn off for most cars.17.  Hair, in a bun, doesn’t dry.a.       If you put your wet hair in a bun, it will stay wet all day. Your hair doesn’t have a surface area to evaporate water.18.  Mascara runs when you sweat.a.       Mascara doesn’t last when you sweat. It is made with water soluble solution, it must be made water soluble due to its proximity to your eye.19.  There isn’t an efficient “seamless” to communicate to someone who doesn’t speak the same language as you.
a.       Languages are complex and have millions of possible combinations of words and sounds. They are difficult to capture due to dialects and other forms of language.   20.  Certain soaps seep into your skin and create a “soapy” texture that you can't get rid off.a.       The chemicals in the soap create this problem. I'm not sure why it exists in some but not all products.

Reflection: This project was challenging for me because I tried to create this list very inorganically by creating them all at once. I found that it was tough to do that, so I retreated to creating 3-4 bugs over the next 2 days. This, I found, was very helpful as it created a motive for me to scout my surroundings over the following days and it created a drive to create solutions for these problems. This assignment helped change my mindset about problem recognition.

  1. I think you did a pretty good job of introducing each bug and explaining why it existed. Each was very short and to the point. And that technique you used to come up with the problems sounds useful. And for the HDMI bug, hang tight, once USB-C is the standard, things will be better. Keep it up!
