21A – Reading Reflection No. 2

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, by Scott Adams, is book about changing your expectations of success and failure. Throughout the book, Adams suggests systems of developing your success without set goals or deadlines.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
The book talks a lot about how success isn’t expectedly achieved very early in life and that most people lack patience when thinking about their success. This was something that we covered when we started the class. Entrepreneurship isn’t something that happens over night, it is failure and suffering for something that you believe in. We started the class with the KFC founder example of sacrifice and of trying different things until they found success.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would design an exercise based finding a skill that you are good at. I would ask students to attempt 3 completely new activities such as public speaking, cooking, bicycling, or painting. Then they would write a reflection on how it went and what they felt like going through those experiences.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
The book talked about being frustrated with where you were in your life. They get moments frustration and I related heavily to that. The separation of where you want to be, and where you are can be difficult to separate.

  1. Hey Robert great post, I also read this book as well. I like your way of thinking on the class activity that you came up with, the 3 activities to better your life. As we read in the book he has his own 3 activities that keep him going and I totally agree it would bee a neat idea to see other peoples ideas for activities.

  2. Hey Robert, awesome post. I hope to read this book soon and find it interesting that the concepts that are covered seem to be very relatable to life in general, not just entrepreneurship. Additionally, regarding your aha moment, I love those moments when something really clicks with you in a book and when I read Shoe Dog by Phil Knight I had a lot of the same revelations. Great Review!

  3. Hey Robert, nice job with your post. The exercise you designed sounds interesting and may be very effective. It sounds like this book was worth your time, I might consider reading it in the future. Regarding your aha moment, I think its safe to say we’ve all been there, everyone is the same in that sense. What makes each one different is how we react to it. Nice job!
